Set in the rural South, Down in the Valley tells the story of Brack Weaver, a young man sentenced to die after a tragic fight. On the night before his execution, he escapes to see his true love one last time. With familiar folk songs woven throughout, the opera explores themes of justice and the struggles of ordinary people in a divided society. It raises questions about fairness, consequences, and the human spirit, all within the context of U.S. history and culture.
Folk-opera in one act, music by Kurt Weill and libretto by Arnold Sungaard.
Produced by the Crane Opera Ensemble with students at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music.
